Soil corrosion site

Two soils can look identical and still present very different corrosion risks.

The durability of buried steel infrastructure depends on the material and its protective coating, as well as the physical and chemical conditions of the surrounding ground.

Water is a key factor in this electrochemical process. Groundwater fluctuations, soil saturation and chemical composition can significantly alter corrosion rates throughout a structure’s service life.

A thorough assessment therefore considers soluble salts, soil resistivity, groundwater levels, drainage conditions and groundwater flow. These factors must be analysed together. A surface drainage system, for example, may remove excess water while leaving some soils close to saturation, extending the period during which corrosion remains active.

Orbis Terrarum combines geology, hydrology and materials science to turn site data into design criteria and targeted mitigation measures.

Because understanding the ground also means understanding how it interacts with the infrastructure built within it.
