The ground may Freeze, but our precision doesn´t

@Orbis Terrarum is currently carrying out geotechnical studies and pull-out tests in #Germany for future photovoltaic plants. This campaign is being executed under challenging winter conditions, with snow and low temperatures affecting the near-surface soil conditions.

In cold climates, snow loads and frost heaving are critical factors in foundation design:

  • Snow increases vertical loads that must be safely transferred to the ground.
  • Frost heave—the upward movement of soil due to ice lens formation—can cause differential displacement, affecting alignment, structural integrity, and the long-term performance of PV systems.

Winter conditions can also modify soil moisture, stiffness and resistance, making the correct interpretation of test results especially critical. For this reason, these studies require not only proper execution, but also technical judgement to obtain representative design parameters.

Despite the climatic constraints, the professionalism and experience of the Orbis Terrarum team allow the campaign to progress according to a demanding schedule, ensuring the quality, reliability, and engineering value of the data delivered to the client.

Ground engineering demands precision, especially when conditions are not ideal.
