AI, Navier–Stokes and flood-risk studies: what connects them?

OpenAI’s recent AI-generated proof addressing the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem has attracted attention beyond mathematics. Its relevance to hydraulic engineering is clear: these equations underpin our understanding of fluid motion.

In @OrbisTerrarum´s flood-risk studies, tools such as HEC-RAS simulate how water moves across terrain, where it accumulates, and the depths and velocities it reaches.

HEC-RAS 2D does not solve the complete three-dimensional Navier–Stokes system directly. It uses depth-averaged shallow-water equations or their diffusion-wave approximation to turn fluid dynamics into practical engineering models.

The significance is not an immediate change in flood modelling. It shows how AI could support scientific reasoning and complex research beyond automation and data processing.
